Ngoni Stadium in Norton delivered a fittingly dramatic finale to the CAF African Schools Football Championship, as Senegal’s boys and Ghana’s girls were crowned continental champions following two gripping penalty shootouts, in front of distinguished guests including Patrice Motsepe.

Both finals ended goalless after regulation time, with defences on top and little to separate the teams across two intensely contested encounters. What followed was high drama from the penalty spot.

In the boys’ final, Senegal overcame Uganda 5-4 in a tense shootout after the East Africans missed their fifth and final penalty. It was a contest defined by discipline and composure, with both sides showing tactical maturity well beyond their years. Senegal held their nerve when it mattered most to seal the title.

The girls’ final produced an even more dramatic finish, as Ghana edged Burkina Faso 9-8 in a marathon West African showdown. With neither side able to break the deadlock in open play, the shootout became a test of endurance and mental strength, with Ghana eventually prevailing after a gripping exchange.

CAF President Patrice Motsepe, who jetted in for the final, officiated at the medal ceremony alongside Nqobile Magwizi, adding further prestige to an already memorable occasion.

The final was also graced by several African football legends, whose presence inspired the next generation. Among them were Esrom Nyandoro, Amanda Dlamini and Lomana LuaLua, each of whom continues to play a key role in uplifting the game across the continent.

The scenes at Ngoni Stadium captured the full emotion of the day — joy for the champions, heartbreak for the runners-up, and appreciation from a vibrant crowd.

Senegal and Ghana leave Norton as worthy champions, but the tournament’s lasting legacy is the promise shown by Africa’s next generation.
