Munhumutapa Challenge Cup Round of 32 Draw Sets Stage for Thrilling Knockout Football

The road to Munhumutapa Challenge Cup glory took another exciting turn today as the highly anticipated Round of 32 Grand Draw was conducted in Harare, officially unveiling the fixtures for both the men’s and women’s competitions.

The colourful event brought together an impressive gathering of football stakeholders, government officials, club representatives, sponsors, administrators and members of the media, underscoring the growing significance of Zimbabwe’s flagship knockout competition.

Among the distinguished guests were the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Sports, Recreation, Arts and Culture, Mr Nicholas Moyo, and the Mayor of the City of Harare, His Worship Councillor Jacob Mafume, alongside ZIFA Executive Committee members, football partners and sponsors who have played an integral role in the competition’s successful journey to date.

The Grand Draw marked the culmination of months of football action that has seen more than 450 men’s and women’s teams from every corner of Zimbabwe compete for the opportunity to reach the Round of 32. Clubs from the Premier Soccer League and Zimbabwe Women’s Premier Soccer League now officially enter the competition, joining the teams that successfully navigated the preliminary rounds to earn their place among the country’s remaining contenders.

With captivating fixtures drawn across both competitions, anticipation is already building for what promises to be a spectacular knockout phase featuring established giants, ambitious challengers and potential giant-killing encounters.

Addressing guests at the ceremony, ZIFA President Nqobile Magwizi described the Munhumutapa Challenge Cup as a defining moment in the Association’s vision of rebuilding Zimbabwean football from the grassroots to the elite level.

“The Munhumutapa Challenge Cup is far more than a football competition. It is a national movement that has brought communities together, created opportunities for hundreds of clubs and thousands of players, and reaffirmed our commitment to building an inclusive football ecosystem where every team has the opportunity to dream,” said Magwizi.

“Seeing more than 450 men’s and women’s teams participate in this inaugural edition is a powerful statement about the passion that exists for football across Zimbabwe. Today’s draw represents another important milestone as we welcome our Premier League clubs into the competition and prepare for a Round of 32 that promises quality, excitement and unforgettable moments. We remain grateful to our Government, sponsors, partners and every stakeholder whose support continues to make this vision possible.”

The draw produced several mouth-watering ties in the men’s competition. Premier League champions Simba Bhora will take on Manica Diamonds in one of the headline fixtures, while Dynamos travel to face Hwange FC. Chicken Inn FC have been paired against Ngezi Platinum Stars in an all-top-flight clash, while Highlanders begin their campaign away to Blackrock. Elsewhere, CAPS United face Scottland Academy, FC Platinum travel to Marere FC, and TelOne FC take on Blanket Mine FC.

The women’s competition is equally poised to deliver high-quality football, with a number of exciting fixtures featuring top-flight clubs against regional qualifiers. Scottland Queens face CAPS United Royals, Black Rhinos Queens take on Waverly Queens, Highlanders Royals meet Black Mambas Queens, while Cranborne Royals have been paired with Chapungu Queens. Chegutu Community Queens received a bye into the next round.

The Grand Draw was streamed live by the national broadcasted ZBC and on the ZIFA YouTube channel, allowing football fans across the country and beyond to witness the occasion as the knockout bracket officially came to life.

The Munhumutapa Challenge Cup has already become one of the country’s most celebrated football competitions, reconnecting communities with the national game while providing clubs from every level of Zimbabwean football with an unprecedented pathway to compete on the biggest stage.
