Day Three Delivers Practical Learning at FIFA MA Elite Referees Course

BULAWAYO – The FIFA Member Association (MA) Course for Elite Men and Women Referees entered its third day on Wednesday with participants immersed in a blend of practical field exercises and technical classroom sessions designed to strengthen decision-making, consistency and match management.

The intensive programme, hosted by the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA), continues to equip the country’s top match officials with the knowledge, fitness and confidence required to officiate at the highest level of the game.

The morning session saw referees take to the field for practical activities involving players, with each scenario reviewed through instant television replay. The real-time feedback enabled officials to analyse their positioning, communication and application of the Laws of the Game, while gaining valuable insights into modern refereeing standards.

The afternoon programme shifted to the classroom, where participants tackled one of football’s most debated topics—handball considerations. Officials explored the latest interpretations and practical application of the law before completing a video-based assessment and interactive discussion centred on real match incidents.

The day concluded with a physical presentation focusing on maintaining peak fitness throughout the season, reinforcing the importance of physical preparedness in modern officiating.

FIFA Referees Instructor Felix Tangawarima praised the commitment shown by the participants and highlighted the value of combining theory with practical application.

“Today’s practical sessions allowed referees to immediately apply what they have learned and then analyse their decisions using video feedback. That process is invaluable because it develops consistency, confidence and a better understanding of modern football,” said Tangawarima.

“Every exercise is designed to prepare our officials for the demands of elite football, where every decision can influence the outcome of a match. The willingness shown by the participants to learn and improve has been outstanding.”

The FIFA MA Course follows a structured curriculum that combines physical conditioning, classroom instruction, practical simulations and video analysis to ensure officials remain aligned with FIFA’s latest refereeing standards.

ZIFA Referees Manager Philani Ncube said the programme reflects the Association’s commitment to continuous professional development and building a strong pipeline of elite match officials.

“Our objective is to ensure that Zimbabwean referees continue to develop in every aspect of officiating—technically, physically and mentally,” said Ncube.

“Courses of this nature expose our officials to international best practice while reinforcing the consistency and professionalism expected at both domestic and international level. We are investing in our referees because quality officiating is fundamental to the growth of Zimbabwean football.”

With two days remaining, participants will continue their practical training, focusing on penalty area incidents and offside decision-making before concluding the course with dedicated sessions on integrity, professional report writing and final evaluations.

The FIFA MA Course forms part of ZIFA’s broader drive to enhance refereeing standards through continuous education, capacity building and adherence to the highest levels of professionalism.
