Mighty Warriors Head Coach Sithethelelwe Sibanda has welcomed Zimbabwe’s draw in the African qualifiers for the Women’s Football Tournament at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games, describing it as a competitive but familiar assignment.
Zimbabwe has been drawn against Malawi in the second round, with the two – legged tie scheduled for 5-13 October 2026.
Sibanda – affectionately known as “Kwinji 15” – acknowledged the regional rivalry while pointing to recent results as a source of encouragement.
“Malawi is a team we know very well, and they will be just as determined as we are,” she said. “We played them in the Three Nations Tournament in Malawi last November and managed to win, which gives us confidence. But this is a qualifier – it will demand even more from us.”
The Mighty Warriors’ recent form has shown steady progress under Sibanda. Zimbabwe finished fourth at the COSAFA Women’s Championship in Polokwane, South Africa, a campaign that highlighted the team’s growing competitiveness and resilience against strong regional opposition.
“That tournament was an important step for us,” Sibanda noted. “We showed improvement in our structure, our game management, and our mentality. Now the challenge is to build on that and be even better in the qualifiers.”

Sibanda emphasised that knockout football requires discipline and consistency across both legs.
“These matches are decided by small details. We have to stay organised, take our chances, and remain focused over the full 180 minutes. Playing away from home will test us, but we must embrace that challenge.”
She also highlighted the increasing depth within the squad, crediting ongoing development structures for strengthening the national team.
“There is healthy competition for places, and that pushes the players to improve every day. We are building a team that can compete and represent Zimbabwe with pride.”
Looking ahead, Sibanda called on supporters to rally behind the Mighty Warriors as they pursue Olympic qualification.
“We believe in what we are building. With the support of the nation, we are confident we can take this next step.”
The Mighty Warriors will now intensify preparations as they look to convert momentum into success on the road to Los Angeles.
