ZIFA has marked a significant milestone on the global stage after Competitions & Projects Manager Kudzai Chitima and Women’s Football Lead Ivy Mukahanana graduated from the second edition of the FIFA Guardians Safeguarding in Football Diploma at FIFA Headquarters in Zurich, Switzerland.
Their achievement is more than a personal academic triumph. It is a proud moment for Zimbabwean football and a meaningful step forward in ZIFA’s continued efforts to strengthen the game both on and off the pitch. In becoming the first Zimbabweans to complete this prestigious programme, Chitima and Mukahanana have placed themselves at the forefront of one of football’s most important areas of modern development.
The FIFA Guardians Safeguarding in Football Diploma is a two-year blended learning programme designed to equip football administrators with the knowledge, tools and leadership needed to build safer and more positive environments for everyone involved in the game. Combining online learning with residential workshops, the course forms part of FIFA’s wider commitment to helping Member Associations develop strong safeguarding principles and systems. With more youth competitions being created by FIFA and CAF, safeguarding has become an even greater priority for the global game, as it is central to the successful delivery of tournaments and the protection of all participants.

For ZIFA, this graduation carries even deeper meaning. At a time when Zimbabwean football is focused on renewal, credibility and institutional growth, the success of Chitima and Mukahanana reflects an association that is investing in the right values as well as the right people. Safeguarding is no longer a side conversation in world football. It sits at the heart of how the game must be governed, taught and experienced, especially by women, children and young players.
There is added significance to this achievement when viewed in its full context. During the period of suspension, ZIFA was unable to participate in the first edition of the diploma. Today, however, Zimbabwe returns to the FIFA stage with distinction through a milestone that deserves to be celebrated across the game. The graduation of Chitima and Mukahanana is not only a personal accomplishment, but a national football achievement that strengthens ZIFA’s capacity to build safeguarding structures that are stronger, more responsive and fit for the modern game. Above all, it reinforces the belief that football in Zimbabwe must be safe, inclusive and enriching for everyone involved.
