Zimbabwe’s Women Continue to Shape the Future of Football

Zimbabwean women continue to leave an indelible mark on the game, not only on the pitch, but also in the corridors of leadership, governance and match officiating. In recent days, Zimbabwean football once again found itself proudly represented across the region as women from the country stepped forward to contribute to the growth and professionalisation of the game.

From boardrooms to training workshops and matchday officiating, their presence reflects the steady progress being made in strengthening the role of women within Zimbabwean football.

A significant highlight came in South Africa, where ZIFA Vice President Loveness Mukura and ZIFA Executive Committee member Chido Chizondo participated in the CAF/COSAFA Women’s Football Administrators and Leadership Workshop, held from 3–5 March. The workshop brought together leading voices in the women’s game across the region, creating a platform for dialogue, collaboration and the exchange of ideas aimed at accelerating the growth of women’s football across the African continent.

Their participation represents more than attendance at a regional forum. It signals Zimbabwe’s commitment to ensuring that women are present and influential in the decision-making spaces shaping the future of the sport. Through platforms such as this workshop, administrators are equipped with the knowledge, networks and strategic insight required to strengthen governance structures, develop sustainable programmes and elevate opportunities for the next generation of female footballers.

For Zimbabwe, the presence of Mukura and Chizondo at such a forum reinforces the Association’s broader vision of building a modern, inclusive football ecosystem where women are empowered to lead, innovate and contribute meaningfully to the game’s development.

While administrators were contributing to strategic discussions off the field, Zimbabwean officials were also representing the nation with distinction on the pitch. Referees Grace Gimo and Claris Simango were among the match officials entrusted with officiating at the recently concluded COSAFA Women’s Championship 2025. Their selection to handle matches at one of the region’s premier women’s competitions is a strong endorsement of the quality, professionalism and growing reputation of Zimbabwe’s referees within the Southern African football community.

Together, these milestones reflect a broader movement taking place within Zimbabwean football. Across administration, officiating and technical development, women are increasingly stepping into influential roles that shape the direction of the sport.

It is a journey that mirrors the growing prominence of the women’s game across the continent. As opportunities expand and structures strengthen, more women are finding pathways to contribute – whether as players, administrators, coaches or match officials.
