The ZIFA Munhumutapa Challenge Cup continues to expand its footprint across Zimbabwean football, with futsal now taking centre stage as the competition reaches the Southern Region this weekend.

A full programme of fixtures has been lined up at the FIFA Hope Centre in Gwabalanda, Bulawayo, featuring Premier Division, Division One and Women’s futsal teams competing for progression in the country’s premier knockout football competition. The inclusion of futsal in the Munhumutapa Challenge Cup reflects ZIFA’s commitment to developing all formats of the game and creating more competitive opportunities for players, coaches and match officials across the country.

Action gets underway on Saturday, 13 June, with matches in the Southern Region Premier Division, Division One and Women’s categories before continuing on Sunday with another exciting slate of fixtures. The tournament has already generated significant interest among clubs and supporters, providing a valuable platform for talent identification and player development while raising the profile of futsal in Zimbabwe.

ZIFA Technical Director Dominique Niyonzima said the growth of futsal is an important component of the Association’s broader football development strategy. “Futsal plays a critical role in the development of technical skills, decision-making and creativity among players. Its inclusion in the Munhumutapa Challenge Cup demonstrates our commitment to ensuring that every format of football has an opportunity to grow and contribute to the development of the game in Zimbabwe,” said Niyonzima. He added that the competition provides players with an opportunity to showcase their talent while helping to strengthen futsal structures throughout the country.

The Munhumutapa Challenge Cup, launched earlier this year, was designed to create a truly national football competition that embraces men’s football, women’s football, youth football, beach soccer and futsal, providing a pathway for participation and excellence at every level of the game. As the Southern Region prepares for an exciting weekend of futsal action, teams will be aiming not only for victory but also to make their mark in a competition that continues to unite communities and celebrate Zimbabwe’s rich football heritage.
